Meet the School Nurse:

Hello, I’m Nurse Nicole. I am a KISD graduate and started here at Heritage Elementary in the 24-25 school year. I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas Women’s University and I also have a Bachelor of Art in Psychology from the University of North Texas. I’ve worked in a variety of hospital settings including 8 years in women’s health and post-partum and 3 years in psych before starting with Keller ISD as a school nurse. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me regarding any of your students' medical needs.

Some Important Information:

Keller ISD follows guidelines set by the Texas Department of Health for communicable illness.

  • Please keep your student home for the following conditions:
  • Temperature of 100 degrees or above
  • Vomiting or diarrhea (not caused by food intolerance)
  • Red, draining eyes
  • Presence of live lice in hair
  • Rash of undetermined cause
  • Open draining lesions
  • Undiagnosed scaly patches on the body or scalp
  • Pain/swelling in the angle of the jaw
  • Jaundice
  • Suffering from a reportable illness defined by the Texas Department of Health

NOTE: Students observed with any of the above while at school will be sent home by the school nurse or trained personnel.

The state of Texas also requires students to be symptom and FEVER FREE for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications, before returning to school.

Health Screenings:

Hearing and Vision screening are mandated by the state of Texas for grades K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, as well as new students to the district. 5th grade girls will also be screened for scoliosis, opt-out forms will be sent out 2 weeks prior to the screening date. Students will also be assessed for Acanthosis Nigricans (AN), a pre-diabetes skin marker on the nape of the neck.

Medications at School:

  • Students must have a medical necessity for the medication at school.
  • Parents/Guardian must complete a medication authorization form (which can be found on the Keller ISD Health Services Website or in the nurse's office).
  • Medicine must be brought by an adult, in the original container, with prescription label, indicate a child's dose, and not be expired.
  • Over the Counter medications also requires a doctor's note with a signed KISD medication authorization form. This includes medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, allergy medications, cough medicine, cough drops, etc.
  • Cough Drops are considered an over-the-counter medication per KISD, thus requiring a Medication Authorization Form.
  • Medication must be picked up by a parent at the end of the school year or it will be discarded. NO medication will be held over the summer.
  • Medications must be FDA approved, no homeopathic medications can be given at school.
  • Students are NOT allowed to have inhalers, cough drops, ointments, or any other medication on them!

Illness/ Injury at School:

  • In the event of a serious accident or emergency, parents will be notified immediately. Please keep your students’ records updated with current emergency information and numbers.
  • Minor cuts/scrapes may be handled in the classroom
  • All head injuries are sent to the nurse’s office and even if all is well with the student, parents will be notified.

Medical Conditions:

Please let me know at the start of the school year if your child has a medical condition that may affect them while they are here at school. Forms may need to be filled out and have a doctor’s signature for allergies or certain medical condition.
